Ladies Double: Congratulations to the St. Francis Ladies on completing a league and championship double by lifting the league title in Shane McGettigan Park last Saturday morning. As in the Intermediate championship final, it was Dromahair once again who provided the opposition. In that game, St. Francis won by the slenderest of margins with a late point but there was no doubting this result with a final score line of St. Francis 4-09, Dromahair 1-08. What a season it has been for these young ladies who are a credit to their clubs and communities.

Jubilee Celebrations: Congratulations to St. Patrick’s National School on celebrating the 50th anniversary of the school’s opening in November 1974. Huge crowds flocked to the school over the weekend as pupils, past pupils, teachers, parents and grandparents gathered to mark the contribution the school has made to the community over the past fifty years. There were lovely scenes of joy and happiness as former classmates met for the first time in years to recount stories and remember their childhood days. People moved freely around the classrooms and stood in awe at how the school has grown and developed since it first opened its doors in November 1974. A wonderful display of photographs had many people scratching their heads as they tried to figure out who was who. Former pupils and staff members who have passed to their eternal reward were fondly remembered by Fr. Frankie at Friday morning’s mass and in speeches delivered by Principal, Ruth McLoughlin, Chairperson, Martin McGowan and Bishop of Ardagh & Clonmacnoise, Most Rev. Paul Connell on Saturday afternoon. A book outlining the history and development of the school over the last fifty years was launched and is a must have for anybody who has any association with the school. St. Patrick’s NS has very strong links with Allen Gaels GAA over those fifty years and long may that continue. The club extends its congratulations to Ruth and her staff in organising such a wonderful weekend of celebration. Míle buíochas.

All-Star Michelle: What a year it has been for Michelle Monaghan. Not only did she win an All-Ireland Intermediate title with the Leitrim Ladies and a Co. Intermediate title with St. Francis Ladies, but she has now capped it all by winning a coveted All-Star award in recognition of her outstanding performances with the Leitrim Ladies on their way to championship glory. Indeed, the Leitrim Ladies took seven awards at the recent All-Star Awards ceremony. Congratulations Michelle, on your magnificent achievements this year.

Leitrim Seniors: Last weekend saw the appointment of a new managerial set-up for the Leitrim senior team. We wish new manager Steven Poacher and his backroom team of Anthony McGrath, Daniel St. Ledger and Ryan Jones, every success for the coming year.

Lucky Dip winners of €20 each were Danielle McManus, Donnacha Lynch, Carmel Smyth, Brian Mooney & Fran Curran. Winnings may be collected in Hegarty’s Centra store from Thursday following the draw. Ladies: Despite an impressive second-half performance, the St. Francis Ladies bowed out of the AIB Connacht Club Intermediate Championship in Drumshanbo last Sunday. This game was won and lost in the first-half when the Galway champions, Annaghdown, built up a good lead despite playing against a strong breeze. Their forwards were very accurate in front of the posts with an early goal and some well-taken points. Our forwards, on the other hand, just couldn’t shake off a tight-marking defence and the Galway side entered the half-time break with a 1-08 to 0-02 lead. However, it was a very different story in the second half when the St. Francis forwards rocked the Galway champions with two early goals. In fact, the home side outscored their opponents in the second half by 2-03 to 0-02. It was a powerful second-half performance by the Leitrim champions as they harried and hassled and showed incredible fitness levels in an all-out effort to pull back that big first-half lead. They did very well to reduce the gap to two points and the Annaghdown girls were more than happy to hear the final whistle. Final score was St. Francis 2-05, Annaghdown 1-10.

Intermediate Final: Allen Gaels supporters stood in stunned silence and disbelief after referee Eamonn Dolan blew the full-time whistle in the Smith Monumentals Intermediate Championship Final in Ballinamore last Sunday afternoon. With Allen Gaels in total control after an outstanding second half performance and leading by eight points, with time almost up, Melvin Gaels somehow managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in a truly unbelievable finish. Even the most ardent Melvin Gaels supporters could not believe what unfolded before them as the game entered its final stages. What followed in those dying minutes was the stuff of dreams or the stuff of nightmares, depending on your allegiance, as the North Leitrim side struck for three goals in the space of six incredible minutes. Allen Gaels opened the scoring in a closely contested first half and led for the entire game until those final crazy minutes. The Drumshanbo side took a two-point lead into the half-time break (0-07 to 0-05,) but really cut loose in the second half as the full-forward line wreaked havoc. Two early goals from Ciarán McMorrow and two classy points from Ciarán Walsh gave Allen Gaels what looked like an unassailable ten-point lead midway through the second period. The game seemed to be petering out to a predictable conclusion until the last minute of normal time when the Kinlough side struck for what looked like a consolation goal. They then sensed that all was not lost and two further injury-time goals saw them across the line by the narrowest of margins. The final score-line was Allen Gaels 2-10, Melvin Gaels 3-08. The club extends its sincere thanks to the team and management for the incredible efforts they put in all year. Treise libh.

Monday, October 7th

It is most encouraging for both teams to see their club colours flying high and to know they have such support from the whole community.

Congratulations:  Heartiest congratulations to the St. Francis Ladies team & management on winning the Intermediate Championship Final in Cloone last Saturday afternoon. The girls were behind for much of the game against a very competitive Dromahair side, but their never say die attitude saw them get over the line in a thrilling last few minutes. Two late points from player of the game, Ailish Cornyn, saw them come from behind and take the honours by the narrowest of margins. It was a just reward for the commitment and dedication they have shown throughout the year. The girls are in action again on Saturday next, when they entertain Galway champions Annaghdown in the Connacht Championship.

Boys Underage: The final round of group games in the Barna Waste Div. 1 Championship were played last Tuesday evening, with Allen Gaels just failing to make the semi-final stage when being defeated by Glencar/Manorhamilton. The game takes place in Ballinamore with the throw-in at 3.30pm.

Intermediate Championship: Congratulations to the Intermediate team who have automatically qualified for the semi-finals of the Smith Monumentals Intermediate Championship due to their fine victory over Aughnasheelin last Sunday. In blustery conditions, the Gaels took advantage of the wind at their backs and built up a 1-08 to 1-01 half-time lead, which included a well-taken goal from corner forward, Ciarán McMorrow. The expected fightback from Aughnasheelin, with the wind in their favour on the resumption, never materialised and a slick move up the wing which was finished to the net by Caleb Duffy, finished the game as a contest. Final score was 2-18 to 1-05. Because of a superior scoring difference, Allen Gaels just edged out Melvin Gaels to clinch that semi-final spot and now await the outcome of the quarter-finals to see who their next opponents will be.

Carrigallen led for most of the 1st half, but the Gaels clawed their way back into it and the teams went in level, four points each, at half-time in a very low-scoring game. The home side dominated the 3rd quarter and hit four unanswered points with fifteen minutes remaining. However, the visitors fought back and drew level with minutes remaining. The result hinged on a very controversial decision near the end when Allen Gaels player Jake Tobin appeared to tap over a straightforward free, but after consulting with his umpire and his linesman, referee Seamus Mulhern, adjudged the ball to have gone wide of the post. Final score was Allen Gaels 0-08, Carrigallen 0-08. The lads travel to Aughavas for Rd. 3 of the championship on Saturday evening next with a 7.00pm throw-in.

Junior B: Well done to the Junior B team who beat neighbours Kiltubrid in the Leitrim Fresh Today Junior B Championship last Sunday on a scoreline of 1-19 to 2-08.

U-15, Div. 2: A disappointing result for the U-15 team who lost their home fixture to St. Joseph’s last Monday evening. Final score was Allen Gaels 3-10, St. Joseph’s 6-11.

Ladies: The St. Francis Ladies had a fine win over Annaduff in their opening game of the Ladies Intermediate Championship which was played in Drumshanbo last Sunday morning. Final score was St. Francis 2-13, Annaduff 0-05.

Leitrim U-16’s: Congratulations to the Leitrim U-16 team who beat Galway in the final of the Fr. Manning Cup in Pearse Park, Longford, last Saturday morning. Leitrim led by 1-07 to 0-05 at half-time and held on to win on a scoreline of 2-12 to 2-09. A wonderful achievement. Special congratulations to the Allen Gaels contingent of Daire McCabe (Capt.), Senan McGowan, Oisín McGarry, Mark Nolan, Rhionn Gallagher & Daniel Gilraine. We also offer our congratulations to coach Martin McGowan who has had a huge influence on these fine young players.

Leitrim Ladies: There was a great gathering at the club grounds last Wednesday evening to welcome the Leitrim Ladies team when they arrived with the Mary Quinn Cup. The St. Francis Ladies teams along with the Mothers & Others formed a guard of honour as the newly-crowned All-Ireland Intermediate champions made their way to the clubhouse, led  by the two local team members Michelle Monaghan & Lauryn McKeon. The large crowd cheered and clapped enthusiastically as the two girls hoisted the trophy high on the clubhouse balcony before the team members were individually introduced by MC, Councillor Enda McGloin. Team captain, Michelle Guckian, as well as Michelle & Lauryn, addressed the large gathering and thanked them for coming out in such big numbers. It was very uplifting to see the team mix so freely with their many young fans as they signed autographs and posed for photographs. Well done to chairperson, Berni Lynch and her team for organising the event at short notice.

Shroomsday: As a result of the recent fundraiser held on June 2nd, in memory of the late Ronan Moran, over €17,000 was raised for various charities & organisations. Last Sunday afternoon a presentation event was held in the clubhouse to donate the proceeds to the various beneficiaries. Representatives from the various groups were in attendance to accept the funds allocated to them and were most appreciative of this generous gesture from the club. The beneficiaries were Drumshanbo Christmas Lights, Drumshanbo Tidy Towns, Childhood Days, St. Ciarán’s Day Services, Ruairí Higgins, Michael Barry, Drumshanbo Senior Citizens, Drumshanbo SVP, St. Patrick’s National School, Drumshanbo Vocational School, Leitrim Calling & CASA, c/o Fr. Murray PP.

Intermediate Championship: The draw for Rd. 2 of the Smith Monumentals Intermediate Championship took place last Sunday evening and sees Allen Gaels pitted against Carrigallen on Saturday evening next at 7.00pm in Shane McGettigan Park. After a hard-fought draw against St. Mary’s in the opening round let’s hope the lads can record their first win of the campaign.

St. Francis Ladies: A depleted St. Francis Ladies team lost out to Dromahair in their away league encounter last weekend. Hopefully they will have the full complement of players on board and get off to a winning start next Sunday morning when they entertain Annaduff in the first round of the championship.

U-14 Girls: There was no joy for the U-14 Girls last week as they lost out to Dromahair when the two sides met in Ballinaglera.

U-18 Girls: The minor girls finished their campaign with a home fixture against Carrick last week. Unfortunately, the visiting side proved too strong and came away with the spoils.

U-15, Div. 2: There were mixed fortunes for the U-15 boys this past week in the Westlink Coaches Div. 2 Championship. After recording their third win in a row over Melvin Gaels last week, the lads tasted their first defeat of the championship in their home fixture against MacDiarmada Gael last Monday night.

Sympathy: We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Philip Fee, Derryhallow. Philip was a stalwart and solid full-back of various Drumshanbo teams during the 1960’s. The club extends its sympathy to Philip’s wife and children and to his siblings Joseph, Liam & Marian on their recent bereavement. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

Intermediate Championship: The intermediate team began their championship campaign in Páirc Naomh Mhuire, Carrick-on-Shannon last Saturday evening. In a nail-biting finish, St. Mary’s denied the Gaels a winning start by earning a draw with an injury-time free. Allen Gaels started well and built up an early lead, but St. Mary’s finished the first half strongly and the sides went in level at half-time. Midway through the second half, St. Mary’s struck a decisive blow with a well-taken goal but our lads fought back bravely with four unanswered points to take a one-point lead. It looked like victory was on the cards until St. Mary’s equalised with that late free. Final score was St. Mary’s 1-09, Allen Gaels 0-12.

U-15 Div. 2: The U-15 team played Melvin Gaels on Tuesday, August 6th hoping to make it three wins out of three in the Westlink Coaches Division 2 championship. Result to follow.

U-18 Girls: Not a good night for the Minor girls on Monday last when they travelled to Manorhamilton and were well beaten by the home side. Hopefully they can get a win on Wednesday, Aug. 7th when they host Carrick in their next fixture.

Fr. Manning Cup: Well done to the Leitrim U-16 team who defeated South Kerry in the semi-final of the Fr. Manning Cup last Sunday morning by the narrowest of margins. There was a very strong Allen Gaels representation through Oisín McGarry, Rhionn Gallagher, Mark Nolan, Senan McGowan & team captain, Daire McCabe.

Funding Application: There was exciting news for the club last week with the announcement that €207,225 in Community Recognition funding has been approved for a new Astro- Turf pitch at Shane McGettigan Park. This funding will greatly improve facilities at the pitch, not only for the club, but for the community as a whole. The club deeply appreciates the assistance of all those involved in our application, especially Fergal McPartland, Declan Keville & Councillor Enda McGloin.

Leitrim Ladies: Well, what can one say? What a day for Leitrim football in Croke Park last Sunday. The Leitrim Ladies put in an outstanding display to clinch the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship in a pulsating game against Tyrone. There was certainly no question of freezing on the big day as the team drove forward again and again to finish with some wonderful scores. Seven points up with ten minutes remaining it looked as though the Leitrim girls were home and dry, but Tyrone put in a storming finish to reduce the deficit to one point before the referee blew the final whistle. A big thank you and heartiest congratulations to Jonny Garrity, his management team, the players and especially our club members, Michelle & Lauryn for leaving us with memories that will last a lifetime. The rapturous welcome and homecoming afforded to the newly-crowned All-Ireland champions in Carrick-on-Shannon on Sunday evening was richly deserved and a fitting tribute to their selfless dedication and preparation throughout the year.

Mothers & Others: Congratulations to the Allen Gaels G4MO team and their management team led by Eamonn McGowan who had the unbelievable experience of playing in Croke Park on All-Ireland Final day. The team played at half-time during the Intermediate final in what was an unforgettable day for Leitrim supporters.

Mothers & Others: Best of luck to Eamonn McGowan and the Allen Gaels G4MO team who will play at half-time during one of the All-Ireland Finals in Croke Park on Sunday next, August 4th. Eamonn has coached the team for the past ten years and this invitation to play in headquarters is no doubt a national recognition for all his efforts to promote the skills of the game and prove that age is no barrier to participation. Indeed, a number of ladies on the team are actively involved in coaching a number of age groups in the club.
