U-16 Girls: The girls played the long awaited U-16 Final against Glencar Manorhamilton on Saturday in Leitrim Village. Unfortunately we could not overcome a very strong Manor team despite some very good performances from quite a few of the girls.
Allen Gaels got off to the perfect start when Caoimhe McGarry burst through the Manor defence and found the net after just 30 seconds. Olwyn Moore put another past the Manorhamilton keeper a few minutes later to put us into an early lead.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t push on and add to this lead. Manor kept the score board ticking over and started to take control of the game before the end of the first half. Just before the end of the first half Muireann Devaney found the net and stretched the lead to 5 points at the interval 1-10 to 2-02. Manor started the second half the way they ended the first and never looked back. Allen Gaels could never get to terms with the Manor forward line, in particular Muireann Devaney and Leah Fox who were both excellent. The final score was 2-16 to 2-04. All the girls played their hearts out and in particular the midfield partnership of Caoimhe McGarry and Roisin McGrenaghan who gave a powerful display, Caoimhe being our stand out player on the day. Olwyn Moore, Jaclyna Ozdobinska, Maria McGrenaghan and Lauryn McKeon all had very good performances also. Well done to the team on their efforts all year and a special thank you to Cara McTigue, Sinead Dolan & Eamonn McGowan for their work with the girls.

LH Heating U-21 Championship: St. Francis lost out to Glencar Manorhamilton in the 13 aside final last Saturday in Pairc Sean MacDiarmada on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-08. A slow start killed us and trailing 1-09 to -02 at the break left us with too much to do although the lads put in a great second half performance and finished very strongly. Wayne Reynolds & Caleb Duffy had our only 2 points of the opening half but a brilliant Ciaran Walsh goal just after the break gave us hope of a revival and although we got on top we didn’t score again until the impressive Cian Beirne pointed in the 42nd minute. A storming last quarter saw us hit 5 points through Ciaran Walsh, Wayne Reynolds (3) and Caleb Duffy but we had too much to do. Well done to the players for a great effort and thank you to Kevin Nolan, Paul Martin, Joe McMorrow & James Wynne for their work with the team.

Brendan Canning: The news of the sudden passing of Brendan Canning was a huge shock to the club and the community, as it became known last Thursday morning. Brendan had a deep involvement in a wide range of voluntary community activities for over 50 years ranging from the GAA to the credit union to amateur drama. In sporting terms, he would be described today as a teenage prodigy. Brendan played in goals for St. Francis as a 16 year old for an historic Junior Championship success in 1963, a first for Drumshanbo. In 1965 he had the unique distinction of representing Leitrim at minor, U-21, junior and senior level in the same year while still in secondary school. He also won a Connacht Minor Hurling Championship medal with Leitrim at this time scoring 3 goals in the final. Indeed he joked that in the All Ireland Semi Final against Limerick which was a one sided affair, he was marked by future All Star & All Ireland Winner, Pat Hartigan, and the pair made a deal that late in the game Brendan would be given free passage to goal to put a gloss on the scoreline – It could only happen to Brendan! He represented Leitrim at senior level for a number of years & enjoyed further club success by winning a three in a row of Division 1 League Titles with Allen Gaels in 1973, 74 & ’75 and was part of that team which contested 6 league finals on the trot and lost a senior championship final in 1973 after a replay. He continued playing into the mid 1980’s and captained the club in the centenary year of 1984. Brendan was also a keen contributor to Scor and excelled in Question Time and was part of the legendary trips to England in 1985 to raise funds for the purchase of The Mayflower as a community centre. He served the club as team selector, referee, coach, Scor participant and he was a great man to pen a poem to celebrate a famous club victory or to contribute to match programmes. He was club secretary on a number of occasions and as recently as 2002 when the Club last won the senior championship and although Brendan would never have said it, he was hugely proud to see his son, Andy make the breakthrough to the senior team and collect a championship medal. One of Brendan’s greatest contributions to the club is often overlooked and that was the role he played in coaching & nurturing a young crop of players in the early 1980’s that would go on to enjoy great success at senior level in the years ahead. He was responsible for creating the ‘town league’ that brought on a generation of young players in that period. As a man, Brendan was fiercely loyal, utterly dependable and a straight talker – he wouldn’t always tell you what you wanted to hear but maybe it was what you needed to hear and there was always common sense & logic behind it. To those who knew him best it will be the quick wit and sense of fun that will be the abiding memory and we will miss those humorous exchanges most of all. The Club performed a guard of honour on Monday at his funeral and a minute’s silence was observed before the County Final on Sunday afternoon. The Club extends deepest condolences to Rosie, Trevor, Andrea, Trina & Andrew, to his brothers John and Mel and sister, Joan, as well as the McGowan, McKeon & Guckian Families, his extended family & a wide circle of friends. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

Barna Recycling U-13 Boys 15 aside Shield Final: The boys were pipped at the last by Mohill after a thrilling encounter in Fenagh on Sunday morning with the final score 4-10 to 3-15. Mohill started the better after the interval and levelled after 5 minutes. There were many great scores on the day with the team of Tommy Aherne, Declan Loftus and Jason Loftus winning out on the day. Best ladies team was Dolores Mulvey, Kathleen Loftus and Marian Fahy with longest drive going to Caleb Duffy and nearest the pin to Niall Loftus. A word of thanks to Captain of the Golf society Chris Fahy for all his help and the society in general for providing so many players on the day. The day was made all the easier thanks to excellent help and cooperation from Chris Lowe at the golf club.

Senior Championship: We came out the right side of the relegation playoff against Annaduff on Sunday morning on a scoreline of 1-08 to 1-05. The game looked to have fallen victim to the weather on Saturday evening but both clubs were anxious to get the game played and so tossed for home advantage with us winning the toss & the game was played in Drumshanbo. The playing conditions were difficult with wind & rain making life tricky for both teams. We got off to the better start with Ciaran Walsh snatching an opportunist goal in the seventh minute as we had the benefit of the cross filed breeze. Neil Nolan was called on to make a full length save and it was the 20th minute before Annaduff got off the mark with a free and a second placed ball 5 minutes later left the minimum between the sides. Nicholas Moore replied to stretch the lead but the visitors were reduced to 14 men with a red card just before the break which left the game finely balanced. Annaduff made light of the numerical disadvantage with their best spell in the opening 10 minutes of the second half when they struck for 1-02 with Ray Cox to the fore. At this stage they led 1-04 to 1-01 and were very much on top. As the game entered the last quarter we needed inspiration from somewhere and Nicholas struck a great long range point from play into the breeze to kick start a recovery. Ciaran Walsh added a point in the 49thminute and we began to move fluently at last with Nicholas hitting a great 45 followed by another point from play to put us ahead. Martin Beirne added 2 quick fire points one from play & one a free in the 56th & 57th minutes. Annaduff struck a point in the last minute but fittingly it was left to Nicholas Moore to complete the scoring from a free to give us an invaluable victory. Well done to the players and management on pulling out a big performance when it was needed most but it doesn’t disguise what was a very disappointing season. We all need to take stock over the winter and have a fresh approach for 2018.

Senior Championship: We lost out to Aughawillan on Saturday evening in Ballinamore by 2-13 to 0-07. St. Francis Ladies: The ladies continued their strong start in the Intermediate Championship with a 2 point win over Oughteragh Gaels in Mohill on Sunday. That victory puts us through to the semi final in a couple of weeks time. Well done to Paddy, Eamonn and the panel.
Division 1: The lads just came up short in the battle to avoid the drop and put in a couple of huge performances over the past week. A good home win over Gortletteragh on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-06, Shane Walsh with both goals, gave us hope but defeat against Glencar Manorhamilton by 1-10 to 0-09 on Saturday evening sealed our fate. A couple of huge decisions went against us in that game and 6 points from Martin Beirne wasn’t enough to bridge the gap. On the plus side, though numbers are limited, the lads have put in a couple of very encouraging performances in the lead up to the championship.
U-17’s: The U-17’s resumed the championship with a trip to Dromahair on Sunday and came away with thepoints after a 4-14 to 4-07 victory. Well done to Noel, Micky, Fergus & the lads.

Longford Leitrim U-12’s: Congratulations to the U-12’s who had a great win over Clonguish in the Division 3 Final on Sunday evening in Pairc Sean. The lads put in a great team performance and came up with crucial goals when they were needed to win by 2 points. Raymond McGarry with a hatrick led the way & further goals from Kian Dennis, Daniel O’Loughlin and the late winner from Padraig Kane made for a memorable victory. Well done to the full panel of Rory Grier, James O’Connor, James Rock, Fionn Gilrane, Adam Casey, Padraig Kane, Aidan Dowler, Daniel O’Loughlin, Kian Dennis, Raymond McGarry, Thomas McKeon, Calum O’Rourke, Conor McKeon, Sean Nolan, Oran Foley, Shane McGovern, Cathal Kenny, Josh McWeeney. Thanks to the mentors who looked after the team Cyril McKeon, Kenneth Dowler, Enda Gilrane & Farrell McKeon.
U-14 Ladies Final: The girls came up just short against Glencar Manorhamilton in the U-14 Final played last Thursday evening in Dromahair on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-08. Manorhamilton had the edge in scoring power and led at the interval but the girls put in a stirring fight back after the break and despite their best efforts couldn’t get enough scores to bridge the gap. Some outstanding goal keeping from Niamh McDonagh kept us in with a shout and a second half goal from Olwyn Moore along with the accurate free taking of Megan Moran just wasn’t enough. Then panel was Niamh McDonagh, Rosalyn Kane, Niamh Morahan, Kaitlyn Dolan, Laoise Fee, Jacquelina Ozdobinska, Maria McGrenaghan, Edel O’Donnell, Megan Moran, Olwyn Moore, Lauren McKeon, Rachel McGarry, Sarah McLoughlin, Grace McKeon, Abby Collins, Étàin O’Connell, Chloe Gilmartin, Aoife Nolan, Ava McGarry, Grace Hopkins, Grace Harding, Katie McManus, Amy O’Donnell, Ava Logan, Jessica Rock. Well done to Ciara McTigue and Sinead Dolan who looked after the girls all year. One final note, the pitch was very heavily sanded and it made playing conditions very difficult for both teams and indeed both sides deserved better for a championship final.
St. Francis Ladies: The ladies got off to a great start in the Intermediate Championship with a win over Mohill on Sunday in Ballinamore on a scoreline of 6-07 to 4-09. A good start is half the battle and 3 goals in theopening quarter gave us a cushion and despite a spirited comeback from Mohill we held on for a crucial win. Well done to the girls and to Paddy & Eamonn. Next up is Oughteragh Gaels in Mohill next Sunday at 12noon.
Division 1: Another blitz of fixtures this week with a home game against Gortletteragh on Wednesday evening at 8pm in the park and we travel to Manorhamilton on Saturday for the final round of the league at 7pm. Best of luck to Kevin, Noel, Paul and the lads.
Division 3: The lads completed the league programme with a win in Glenfarne on Sunday with the score 4-10 to 2-10. Goals from Caleb Duffy, Gareth Higgins, Wayne Gunning & Ciaran Walsh got us over the line. Strangely there is still a game outstanding which has a bearing on relegation so the final league placings are not yet known.
U-17’s: The U-17’s kicked off the championship at home to Leitrim Gaels on Monday evening but unfortunately the game was abandoned after only 10 minutes when a serious accidental clash of heads, resulted in both our own Colin Moran and Leitrim Gaels, Jack Flynn, being taken away by ambulance after a sickening collision. We wish the 2 lads a speedy and full recovery. Many thanks to everyone who helped out at the pitch especially Dr. Declan Loftus who attended to both players.
U-15’s: We played out a very enjoyable draw with Fenagh last week in the Westlink Coaches Championship with the scores tied at 3-09 apiece so well done to the lads. There is no game this week.

Lotto: There was no winner of the lotto jackpot & the numbers drawn were 04-11-21-23. The 5 prize winners of €20 each were: Joanne Barry, Roscunnish; Patsy Cullen, Drumkeelan; Debra Keaney, Aughacashel; Delia Mann, Jamestown and Terry Beckett, Drumshanbo. Leitrim U-14 Girls All Ireland Champions: Congratulations to the team & management on winning the All Ireland B Final against Armagh on Saturday on a scoreline of 8-12 to 4-03. Division 1: We suffered 2 defeats in the last week that leave us rooted to the bottom of the table. On Wednesday night against Fenagh we lost an extraordinary game 2-13 to 6-04. We led 1-08 to 2-01 at thebreak but in the second half a missed penalty, hitting the woodwork & a couple of gilt edged chances missed, saw us the wrong side of the result. Scorers on the night were: Shane Beirne 1-02; Martin Beirne 1-02; James Flynn 0-03; Nicholas Moore 0-03; Ciaran Walsh 0-01; Brian Mulvey 0-01; Kyle Flynn 0-01. On Saturday evening we lost out to St. Mary’s in Carrick on a scoreline of 3-15 to 0-14 when we played some good football but were again punished at the back. St. Mary’s led 0-09 to 0-05 at the interval but found the net immediately after the break and went on to claim the points despite a brave effort from the 14 men. Scorers: Martin Beirne 0-06; Martin Raftery 0-03; Brian Mulvey 0-02; James Flynn 0-01; Brian Moran 0-01; Ciaran Walsh 0-01. Great to see Martin Beirne back for the first time this year after a serious injury. In terms of thefixtures, although it was known for some time that there would be Wednesday night games, it certainly wasn’t expected that matches would be fixed for the Wednesday after the Connacht Semi Final, asking county panellists to play 3 games in 6 days and the week before the Minor Semi Final, ensuring county minors would miss 2 crucial league games. Lessons need to be learned.
Division 3: We were well beaten by table toppers Mohill at home on Sunday morning. With resources stretched to the limit well done to the lads for fielding in difficult circumstances as it would have been easier to concede the points. Many thanks to Mohill physio, Orla Gordon, who treated Oisin Dolan for a back injury which ended his involvement and we wish Oisin a speedy recovery.
U-15’s: We travel to Manorhamilton on Tuesday evening to play the home side so best of luck to Gareth, Kevin & the lads.

Division 1: We had mixed fortunes last week with our first win away in Aughnasheelin on Wednesday evening on a scoreline of 2-11 to 0-11 but followed up with a defeat in Drumkeerin on Saturday 1—15 to 2-08. We performed really well in Aughnasheelin despite trailing 0-06 to 0-01 after 20 minutes we went in at the break 0-06 to 0-04 our points coming from James Flynn (2), Brian Mulvey & Nicholas Moore. A Ciaran Walsh goal after 41 minutes turned the match and further points from Caleb Duffy, Martin Raftery, James Flynn, Kyle Flynn & Brian Mulvey (3f) put us in control but it took a late goal from Nicholas Moore to seal the win. In Drumkeerin we got off to a great start with Ciaran Walsh again finding the net after 3 minutes and with points from Gareth Higgins, Nicholas Moore, Ciaran Walsh & Brian Mulvey (2), we led 1-05 to 1-04 at the interval. The lack of depth in the panel at the moment told when we couldn’t cope with a couple of injuries and Drumkeerin ran out winners by 4 points. Bryan Beirne, Brian Mulvey, James Flynn & a Nicholas Moore penalty were our second half scores. There is a break now in fixtures until after Leitrim play Roscommon.

Division 1: We lost out away to Aughawillan last weekend on a scoreline of 3-17 to 1-08. After a very competitive opening half we trailed 1-06 to 1-04 with our goal coming from the penalty spot converted by Nicholas Moore & points from Nicholas, Gareth Higgins, Brian Mulvey & Diarmuid McKiernan. Martin Raftery closed the gap to the minimum just after the interval but an Aughawillan goal in the 35th minute put the hosts in charge and despite points from Brian Mulvey (2) and Diarmuid McKiernan a flurry of late scores left the hosts comfortable winners. We play Melvin Gaels at home this Saturday evening at 7pm. Best of luck to the team and management.

Despite being short a number of regulars our team performed brilliantly and after a great win over Longford Slashers, a draw with Granard and a narrow defeat to St Colmcille’s we qualified for the cup quarter final from our group. We came up against a very strong St Vincent’s side and bowed out at that stage. Our thanks again to the St Colmcille’s club for hosting such a great tournament, the parents who travelled to support and especially the players who performed so well. This was great preparation for the cross-county competition which starts in a few weeks’ time. Our players on the day were; Cathal Kenny, Oran Foley, Callum O’Rourke, Cian Dennis, James Rock, Aidan Dowler, Daniel O’Loughlin, Padraic Keane, Thomas McKeon, Shane McGovern, Ruairi Grier and Connor McKeon.

Shield: We were beaten by Ballinaglera in a play off on Saturday evening on a scoreline of 0-12 to 0-09. Ballinaglera playing with a strong breeze led 0-10 to 0-02 at the break but a strong rally in the second half just came up short & in the last minute we grazed the post with an effort that would have levelled the match.
St. Francis Ladies: The ladies had a good win over Drumkeerin on Sunday morning on a scoreline of 7:14 to 4-05. Aine Flood, Ciara McPartland, Maeve Daly, Rachel McLoughlin and Ciara McTigue all found the net in a good team performance. Division 1: Our poor start to the league continued when we were beaten by Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins on Saturday evening on a scoreline of 1-17 to 0-07. The visitors were quick out of the blocks and led 0-06 to 0-03 inside the first quarter. The lads battled hard but a late blitz saw the half time score 0-11 to 0-04 with Brian Mulvey (2), Kevin Moran & Martin Raftery on target for us. The opening play of the second half saw Ballinamore find the net with Diarmuid McKiernan carried off in the same incident. Well done to Kevin Moran who stepped into the breach and performed admirably. Ciaran Walsh, Bryan Beirne & Brian Mulvey added points but a powerful Ballinamore ran out comfortable winners. U-17’s: The lads had a good win over Annaduff at home on Bank Holiday Monday 6-19 to 0-09 but lost to Rinn Gaels on Sunday evening by 1-13 to 0-12. We are now joint top of the table with all our games played and must await the outcome of some outstanding fixtures this week.

Trip to Croke Park: Last Wednesday the U12 Boys and Girls travelled to Croke Park to take part in the Connacht GAA Go Games. They played three 20 minute games taking on Parke/Keelogues/Crimlin from Mayo, Killannin from Galway and St Dominic’s from Roscommon. After the games the team where given a guided tour of Croke Park. A great day was had by all and the children represented the club with pride. The Club would like to thank Leitrim Coaching Officers Thomas Keenan and James Glancy for their hospitality in Croke Park on the day and to the team managers Cyril McKeon, Kenneth Dowler, Farrell McKeon, Paul McGowan and Berni Lynch who made this day possible. The Club would also like to our sponsors for the trip Drumshanbo Credit Union, Patrick McManus, McManus Construction, John Nolan, Leitrim Chimney Cleaning, Ballinaglera GAA and Connacht Council. Thanks also to Paul McGowan, Westlink Coaches who got us there and back safely and all the parents who travel to Croke Park on the day. It was a very memorable day for all but especially for the children who got to experience playing on the hallowed turf.
Division 1: We lost out to Dromahair in Dromahair on Saturday evening on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-06. A depleted side was always playing catch up as we trailed 0-06 to 0-02 at the break, with our first half scores coming from Kyle Flynn & Martin Raftery. The second half followed the same pattern and although a Ciaran Walsh goal on 45 minutes gave us hope we never really looked like overhauling the home side. James Flynn (2), Ciaran & Shane Walsh added scores but 2 points for Dromahair in injury time ensured a deserved victory. Well done to Caleb Duffy who made his senior debut & put in a very good performance. We play Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins at home this Saturday evening at 7pm. Best of luck to all concerned.
St. Francis Ladies: The ladies travel to Dromahair on Sunday morning at 11am to play the home side In the league. Best of luck to Paddy, Eamonn and the team.

Division 1: We were defeated by Mohill on Saturday evening in the opening round of the league by 1-09 to 0-22. However the scoreline doesn’t tell the full story and there were plenty of positives for the management to take from the performance. There was no doubting the excellence of Mohill’s play as the points tally would suggest with Keith Beirne the standout upfront however the lads put in a trojan effort for the hour and took some super scores. We trailed 0-10 to 1-02 at the break with Gareth Higgins finding the net with Ciaran Walsh & Nicholas Moore pointing and had a goal disallowed among other chances. The superior fitness of the large county contingent for the visitors was a big factor in the second period and their sharpness told with a flood of late scores. Nevertheless the lads kept going for the hour and worked a number of lovely points with Nicholas (2), James Flynn (2), Martin Raftery, Kyle Flynn & Danny Egan all finding the range. There’s lots to work on for the coming weeks and with several players to come back into the reckoning the lads shouldn’t be too disappointed. Best wishes to Kevin Moran who suffered a serious facial injury during the match. We play Dromahair away this Saturday evening at 7pm. Best of luck to all concerned.
Division 3: We recorded our first win in the park on Sunday morning with a narrow victory over Annaduff on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-10. We led 1-08 to 1-03 at the break but Annaduff came back strongly in the second half and levelled at 1-10 apiece with time almost up. A quick free by Danny Egan on the stroke of full time found Shane Beirne in space & Shane split the posts to secure the points. There is no Division 3 game this weekend.
St. Francis Ladies: The girls lost the opening league match against Oughteragh Gaels in Ballinamore on Sunday on a scoreline of 3-12 to 3-06.
U-17’s: The lads had two good home wins last week defeating Mohill on Tuesday 4-11 to 2-11 and come out on top against Kiltubrid on Sunday morning 4-07 to 2-08. Well done to the team and we play Dromahair this Wednesday at 7pm in St. Osnat’s Grounds.
U-15’s: We were beaten by St. Josephs last Thursday and we play Glencar Manorhamilton at home this Friday at 7pm. Best of luck to the lads.

Frank McKeon: It was with great sadness that the news of the passing of Frank McKeon was greeted last week within the club and the wider community. Frank & Bernadette moved to Drumshanbo in the mid 1970’s as a result of Frank’s work in Fee’s Joinery. Although he did not become involved with Allen Gaels immediately, he would go on to become a very important figure in the history of the club. After a stellar playing career with Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins in which he enjoyed great success, it was always likely he would be drawn in to the local GAA scene which was such a part of who he was. He often recounted with typical dry humour that when he first arrived in town a well-known local football man said he was a ‘spy’ and not to be trusted, no doubt with Ballinamore’s victory over Allen Gaels in the 1973 senior championship final replay, fresh in the mind. However, Frank became manager in 1985 when the club was at a very low ebb, competing in the bottom rung of Leitrim football and struggling for numbers. He brought a winning mentality and a measured approach to the team and in 1986, the club won a junior league to kick start what would become a meteoric rise through the ranks. The following year 1987, saw the club’s first championship success in 24 years with a Junior A Title. With a talented young group arriving on the scene, Frank was very much the wise head who guided the team to further success with an Intermediate championship in 1989 and ultimately a maiden senior success in 1991 when he masterminded victory over Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins in a huge upset. Frank remained manager until 1995, winning a senior league, junior championship and an U-21 title and falling just short of another senior crown in 1994, in what was a golden era for the club. He shared all of these successes with his great friend and lieutenant on the field, Gerry Keane, with whom he had an unbreakable bond through their passion for football & boxing and no doubt they are reminiscing as we speak. Frank was a selector in 2004/05 with the senior team and was always sought after for his views on the game which were like the man himself shrewd and full of common sense. One of his proudest moments came when Alan gave an outstanding display in the 2002 senior championship final success and although it was not in his nature to sing the praises of his own , it was clearly a very special moment. Apart from football, Frank embodied many fine qualities, he was modest, unassuming, wise, witty, deeply knowledgeable and he was a thoroughly decent man. His calm presence in the community will be sadly missed. To Bernadette, Ruth, Sheila, Olive, Alan and the extended McKeon & Brennan Families we offer our deepest condolences. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

We extend our deepest condolences to the extended McManus Family on their tragic loss. The death of 18 year old Lorraine Lynch followed and was equally difficult to comprehend. We offer our sympathies to the Lynch Family on their devastating loss. Sincere sympathy is also extended to the McGourty Family, Dristernan, on the sad passing of Maureen’s mother, Delia Flanagan, and to the Conlan Family, Hilly Road, on the death of Olive Conlan, both of whom were laid to rest last Wednesday.
