Packie Joe Keane: There was widespread sadness throughout the community on learning last week of the sad passing of a true gentleman, Packie Joe Keane, Knocknasowna. Packie Joe’s son, Pauric, is the current Club chairperson and the Keane Family have a very long association with Allen Gaels. Packie Joe was known far and wide, was a founding member of Drumshanbo Mart and was deeply involved in local politics & loved the cut and thrust of elections. Packie Joe and Brid suffered the tragic loss of their beloved son, Kevin, in 1991 and bore this cross with great strength and dignity. Kevin won minor, junior & intermediate championships in the late 1980’s and The Kevin Keane Player of the Year Awards have been presented in his memory since 1993 and Packie Joe was a great supporter of the
awards, doing the honours at countless dinner dances and award nights. Indeed he had the proud honour to present his son, John, with Minor Player of the Year in 1998 and the Senior Player Award in 2007. In latter years it has been Pauric who has maintained the family connection and has just completed his 3rd year in the chair. As a mark of respect, the Club performed a Guard of Honour at the Church on Saturday. To Brid, Teresa, Brian, Yvonne, Alison, Edel, Pauric and John, to his large extended family and a wide circle of neighbours & friends, the Club extends deepest condolences.

Get well soon: The club would like to wish 2 of our underage players Daire McCabe & Shane McGovern a speedy recovery following nasty injuries last week.
Petie O’Rourke: There was widespread sadness in the club on learning of the untimely passing of Petie O’Rourke last week. Petie had a very deep association with Drumshanbo from his working days in Lairds factory to his planning and design business that brought him the length and breadth of the county. He was a star player on the successful Allen Gaels side of the 1970’s that contested 6 senior league finals in succession and won 3 in a row from 1973-75. Despite that team’s great consistency, it never won a championship and one of Petie’s sporting regrets was the 1973 Senior championship final, lost by a point after a replay to the great Sean O’Heslins side of that era. Nevertheless he was immensely proud of that team, as he lined out with many of his neighbours and friends from Ballinaglaera throughout the 1970’s before the Ballinaglaera Club reformed in 1981. In later years Petie was a valued member of the Allen Gaels Golf Society and the stories from the many trips abroad are legendary. However, it was Petie’s personality that set him apart as he was someone who made friends easily and the fond recollections of him over the past few days are proof of that. Any encounter with Petie invariably meant you left with a smile on your face. To Angela, Melanie, Mark and Jason & the O’Rourke Family, Ballinaglaera GAA and to Petie’s wide circle of friends we extend our deepest condolences. Ni fheicfimid a leitheid aris. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
Sympathy: The club would also like to extend its deepest sympathies to the Egan family on the sad passing of Tommy Egan in Manchester recently. Tommy was a son of Mina and brother of Patricia, Jimmy, Catherine & Sarah. May he rest in peace.

Shane McWeeney: The Club and indeed the wider community was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Shane McWeeney on January 26th last at the age of 85. Shane was a serving Club President and former chairman, as well as a dedicated supporter. Shane was a key figure in the re-emergence of Allen Gaels in the 1980’s when he served in a variety of positions including chairman. He was an excellent organiser and once he committed to something you could be certain it would be carried out to the highest standard. This was particularly the case in fundraising and whether it was the duck derby, race night or dinner dance Shane was there. His sons Gareth, Stephen and Kieran were all key members of championship winning teams through the 1990’s and early 2000’s and this was a source of great pride for Shane who enjoyed that period of success immensely. More recently, he revelled in Gareth’s sons’ achievements with Meath U-17’s, Andrew winning the 2020 Leinster title and Conor going a step further winning the 2021 All Ireland. The Club performed a guard of honour at the funeral on Saturday and were joined by Shane’s former colleagues from Lairds, where he worked for more than 30 years and members of the St. Vincent de Paul, to which Shane gave over 50 years’ service. His was a life characterised by family, faith and hard work. To his wife, Elsie, and to Donal, Gareth, Stephen, Brendan and Kieran, and the wider Family plus a large circle of neighbours and friends, we extend our deepest sympathy. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
