Packie McGarty: Packie McGarty passed to eternal reward last Monday week and the outpouring of glowing tributes from all quarters of the GAA both in Leitrim and further afield give some indication of the regard held for this great servant of Leitrim/Connacht football. For all Leitrim Gaels of a certain generation, the name of Packie McGarty is spoken with reverence due to his many exploits on the playing fields – most of which will be elaborated on in great detail in other parts of this publication. For those of us not fortunate enough to have witnessed the great man in action, we can only listen to the tales of those exploits recounted by fathers, uncles and neighbours that can still remember in minute detail the wonderful talents that he possessed that made him one of the most feared forwards in the country for his generation. While it would be all too easy for us to assume that there may be a certain amount of exaggeration in the accounts of his performances, I need only remind you that Packie played for his county for 23 years, for his province for almost 15 years (this would be considered to be a stalwart club career for most people) and represented Ireland on many occasions in the annual Ireland vs. Combined Universities game. Growing up as a young boy, the fabled stories of Packie McGarty took on the mythological status of a Greek hero fighting some impossible battle. In later life, I consider myself fortunate to have known the great man a little and it always struck me how passionate he was about all things connected to Leitrim GAA, be it the form of the Co. Senior team, hearing about the up and coming young players in the county or indeed the club championships in Leitrim and the chances of his beloved Mohill. As a club we can only offer our sincerest condolences to his wife Ella and his family and say that we are proud that Packie McGarty was from Leitrim and he was an example to Leitrim people everywhere to hold their heads high and never be afraid to rub shoulders those perceived to be stronger.   Packie held true to this ideal throughout his career. “Is bùaine clù nà saol” – fame is more enduring than life. As long as there is a county of Leitrim, the name of Packie McGarty will always be remembered. Ar dheis Dè go raibh a anam dìlis.
